Serena Williams brought her title drought to an end with a victory in the Auckland Classic Final against Jessica Pegula with a final score of 6 – 3, 6 – 4. Williams spoke of how good the win feels after such a long time but made sure to mention what a strong opponent she found Pegula to be. She was, unfortunately, unable to complete a perfect week, however, when she lost the Doubles Final, with Asia Muhammad and Taylor Townsend beating Williams and Caroline Wozniacki 6 – 4, 6 – 4.
The great Tennis player struggled for consistency earlier on in the week but ended up destroying Amanda Anisimova in their Semi-Final with a score of 6 – 1, 6 – 1. She spoke of seeing an improvement in her game as the week went on and said she was grateful for it since she faced some difficult matches.
Williams’ Singles victory sees her collecting her 73rd World Tennis Association title and breaking a losing streak that’s lasted almost three years. This is despite the fact that she has played in five Finals since clinching her 23rd Grand Slam crown with her 2017 Australian Open victory.
She’s chasing Australia’s Margaret Court’s record 24 Grand Slam Singles titles but lost two US Open Finals and two Wimbledon Finals since she beat her older sister Venus in Melbourne almost three years ago.
The 38-year old superstar has let it be known that she will be donating all her prize money to assist Australian bushfire relief.
