Introduction to the New Zealand Derby
The New Zealand Derby as we know it today began when two races were amalgamated in 1973. The original races were the New Zealand Derby run at Riccarton, Christchurch, from 1860. As well as the Great Northern Derby, run at Ellerslie Racecourse, Auckland, since 1875. Riccarton got two 1,600m races for three-year-olds to make up for the loss of its derby.
