Introduction to the New Zealand Derby

The New Zealand Derby as we know it today began when two races were amalgamated in 1973. The original races were the New Zealand Derby run at Riccarton, Christchurch, from 1860. As well as the Great Northern Derby, run at Ellerslie Racecourse, Auckland, since 1875. Riccarton got two 1,600m races for three-year-olds to make up for the loss of its derby. Namely the New Zealand 1000 Guineas and the New Zealand 2000 Guineas.

Initially run in May, the New Zealand Derby was moved to New Year’s Day and then to 26 December (Boxing Day), a date that became a high point in the social calendar and among fans of horse racing betting. In 2006, the event was moved to the first day of the Auckland Cup Week in March. That year saw Wahid, a horse from Allan Sharrock’s stable, win the event. Today, this prestigious 2,400m race is run under set-weight conditions for three-year-old horses. It boasts a total prize pool of NZ$1 million.
