In a Cricket career marked by multiple records, Black Cap batsman Ross Taylor has now claimed possibly the most significant one of all. He’s become the all-time leader in scoring Test runs in New Zealand, and as happy as he is about it he no doubt would’ve preferred it to happen under better circumstances.
His team’s position was a grim one at the time of the new record, sitting with 35 – 4 as they chased 416 for the win. They were headed towards another dreadful defeat and were out just 3 balls later thanks to an excellent Pat Cummins delivery.
He has moved passed Stephen Fleming thanks to reaching 21 in the team’s second innings against the Aussies at the Sydney Cricket Ground stadium. He achieved the milestone in his 175th innings and 99th match, securing it by hitting bowler Nathan Lyon over mid-on for 3.
Taylor has hit 19 Test centuries during his career, the second-most by a New Zealander, and has averaged over 46, which is also the second highest amongst his countrymen. This is on top of 1 000 Test runs. He moved past Fleming for the most One Day International runs by a Kiwi in February last year, and has now got the most in all international game formats for his country.
He also passed 17 250 international runs in this innings and has played a whopping 474 innings in all international formats for Cricket, tying with Brendon McCullum for the most international innings by a player from New Zealand.
