The International Paralympic Committee’s (IPC) decision to allow Russian athletes co compete at the Winter Games has been met with a massive global outcry.
The IPC met on Wednesday, during which meeting it was determined that 72 Russian Paralympic athletes would be permitted to compete in Beijing – but on condition that they take part as “neutral” participants. This decision has been criticised by the UK government and Paralympics Great Britain.
The controversy has also sparked discussions in the sports online betting community, where the inclusion of Russian athletes as neutrals could impact betting odds and strategies.
Those athletes set to compete in Beijing will be doing so under the banner of the IPC and the Russian Paralympic Committee, which are two sanctions that were already passed as a penalty for the recent Russian doping scandal.
The latest sanction now passed provisions that the results of Russian athletes will not be added to the medal table. This sanction will also apply to competitors from Belarus.
Wednesday’s ruling, however, wasn’t expected. The decision is however compliant with those directions issued by the International Olympic Committee earlier this week. According to IPC president Andrew Parsons, given current IPC rules, said sanctions are in fact the harshest possible punishment that can be handed down. He also confirmed that another meeting will be held following the Games for deciding whether a chance to the committee’s rules would be in order.
The group “Athletes of Ukraine” suggested this week that the IPC had chosen profits and the shedding of blood over good reason and stakeholders.
The British government, too, has spoken out in heavy criticism against the IPC’s decision to allow Russian athletes to compete.
