Caused by nothing more than a small printing mistake, England has been named as an African nation during the Commonwealth Game’s official opening ceremony. The error caused embarrassment for the Gold Coast organisers, especially as Banjul was named as the capital of England in the same breath.
The programme was being sold at merchandising tents and news agents for A$10 around the Queensland resort before the error was first reported. In the print, England is listed as having a population of just over two million, and that the country first appeared in the Commonwealth Games in 1970.
Banjul, in fact, is the capital of the West African nation of The Gambia, and was one of the later entries to the Gold Coast Games.
Mark Peters, who oversaw the organising of the committee for the printing of the programme, said that the mistake was made due to The Gambia’s late admission to the games.
He further stated that both The Gambia and England had seen the mistake in good humour, and that England had refused the offer to have the entire programme reprinted.
The error follows another mistake that was made in February, where the wrong day had been listed for the opening event.
Despite the mistakes, the games continued, and feature mostly countries that were once part of the British Empire.
