A terrible back nine on Sunday sent Kiwi golfer Lydia Ko plummeting down the leaderboard standings during the third round of the US Open.
After having started out the day tied for 36th place, Ko emerged unable to make significant headway as she played her round to a score of five-over 76 and a tie in 49th place ahead of the final round on Monday (Sunday US time).
Making the tumble all the more disappointing will have been the world No. 8’s strong start in pursuit of what could have been her first Major title in five years, and her third overall. Part of the Kiwi’s early push had been birdies on the fourth, sixth, and seventh holes on a foggy opening day at the Olympic Club venue in San Francisco.
But that was all before things had started to unravel disastrously in the space of four holes on Saturday. By the time Ko had played out the final four holes to par on Sunday, the damage had already been done leading up to the 41 recorded for the back nine. Before heading to Monday’s final round, Ko finished the day at 16 shots behind the leader, Lexi Thompson of the US.
NZ sports betting enthusiasts will be keeping a close eye on Ko’s performance, hoping for a strong finish. Golf betting fans, in particular, might find exciting opportunities as the tournament concludes.
The Kiwi pro-golfer won her first LPGA tournament in three years when she earlier this year in April won the Lotte Championship in Hawaii, a victory that saw her making her long-anticipated return to the world’s top 10 champion women’s golfers.
