The U.S Golf Open Draws Near

In the world of professional golf, the U.S Open is one of the leading international golfing championship competitions and provides plenty of betting opportunities for local punters. The U.S Open is the second of four golf majors, playing a pivotal role on the PGA Tour and European Tour schedule. The tournament is hosted by the United States Golf Association and is held in June each year. Staged at a variety of courses around the country, the U.S Open is designed to make scoring extremely difficult with accurate driving the key to staying on par.

The tournament is characterised by very tight scoring among the leaders. The winner of the U.S Open usually ends up around even par. It is very seldom that the course is beaten with many previous winners actually clocking over-par wins. In general, a U.S Open course is quite long with a high cut of primary rough, undulating greens and pinched fairways. Some holes that are normally short par fives will be converted into long par fours for the event.

The First U.S Open took place on the 4th of October 1895. It was played on a nine-hole course at the Newport Country Club in Rhode Island. The inaugural competition was played in a single day with a total of 36 holes. At the time, ten professional players entered as well as a single amateur. The winner of the first U.S Open was an Englishman named Horas Rawlins. He received a sum of $150 as well as a $50 gold medal. His golf club received the Championship Cup Trophy.

What to Expect in 2017

This year, the 2017 U.S Open will be the 117th event since its introduction. It is scheduled to be held from the 15th to the 18th of June at Erin Hills in Wisconsin. This will be the first time Wisconsin has hosted the U.S Open despite having hosted four other major Championships. Last year, U.S golfer Dustin Jonson lifted the trophy while fellow American Jordan Spieth claimed the 2015 title. Almost half of the field at the US open will consist of players who are exempt from qualifying for the competition including previous U.S Open winners from the last 10 years. Early favourites for the competition include:

  • Dustin Johnson 7.00
  • Rory Mcilroy 8.00
  • Jason Day 12.00
  • Jordan Spieth 12.00
  • Hideki Matsuyama 15.00
