It’s official: Tom Brady has called time on his career.
The 44-year-old QB announced his retirement after 22 seasons in the NFL on Instagram on Tuesday.
Rumours about Brady’s retirement already started circulating on the weekend. The Buccaneers however at the time said they had not been informed of any future plans by Brady.
The star quarterback, who is a remarkable seven-time champion, steps down after the Bucs were crashed out of the NFL Playoffs by the Los Angeles Rams. At 27-27, the Rams kicked a game-securing field goal to advance to the Super Bowl opposite the Cincinnati Bengals.
Retiring as the player with the most Super Bowls completed in the history of the NFL, Brady is assured of a spot in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. He’s due to become eligible for inclusion in 2027.
Unlike most other players nearing his current age, Brady exits the NFL without a decline in his quality of play. This season, he led the league in TDs, yards, completions and attempts. He’ll also likely finish a top MVP nominee alongside Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Should Brady walk away with the award, he’ll be completing his stellar career as a four-time MVP player.
Other accolades include finishing his career as the league’s all-time leader in quarterback wins (regular as well as post-season), Super Bowl victories (7), Super Bowl appearances (10), passing yards, and passing touchdowns.
Brady said at the time of his announcement that he now looks forward to spending more time with his family.
