Time for Wallaceville Estate Wellington Cup Day!
The Wellington Cup Carnival started in fine style on Super Saturday, last week’s Classic Day at Trentham. Punters saw some great racing, with 3-year-old colt Hall Of Fame winning the Levin Classic by a nose at $2.30. In the Tui – Backing a Winner Since 1889 Anniversary Handicap, 6-year-old gelding Seize The Moment lived up to his name, to win at a respectable return of $8.70.
The big surprise of the day was Sampson, at $22.30 obviously not impressing the bookies, romping home in the 2,100m Trentham Stakes.
This Saturday sees the Wellington Cup Carnival reach a crescendo on Wallaceville Estate Wellington Cup Day, with the main feature race restored to its original two-mile length at 3,200m, and a purse upgraded to $250,000, despite relegation to Group 3.
Some Fancied Stayers in the Wellington Cup
Sadly for New Zealand’s betting fans, Sampson won’t be running in the 2017 Wallaceville Estate Wellington Cup. Trainer Howie Matthews refused to enter the 7-year-old gelding because he was expected to carry top-weight of 60kg.
Last year’s Cup winner, Mister Impatience, was an outsider at $29. The 6-year-old gelding is being offered at $16 this year. He could still be worth a punt, however, as a great stayer. You can also get $10 odds on 5-year-old geldings Jacksstar and Sly Romance. Sly Romance demonstrated his staying abilities while winning over 3,400m at Mornington and 4,000m at Caulfield last year.
The current favourites for the 2017 Wallaceville Estate Wellington Cup are 4-year-old gelding Clarify, at $6.00, 5-year-old gelding Bloodstream at $7.00, 4-year-old mare Fanatic at $8.00, and two more geldings, 5-year-old Alinko Prince and 6-year-old Balham, both at $9.00.
Telegraph Field Wide Open
The other important race on Wellington Cup Day is the Group 1 JR and N Berkett Telegraph over 1,200m, also with a purse of $250,000. Perfect Fit, a 5-year-old mare, gets the nod from the bookies at $3.20, but 6-year-old gelding Start Wondering, 4-year-old mare First Serve, and 3-year-old filly Luna Rossa are all being offered at under $10.00 too.
If you’re keen to take a flyer on an outsider, take a look at 4-year-old mare No More Tears, currently at $21.00. Or even consider Passing Shot, at $41.00. This is the 5-year-old’s first race since he was gelded after a disappointing spring, so betting fans will be keen to see if it makes any difference in his sprints.
