Lewis Hamilton has secured a pole position for his next race at the United States Grand Prix by just 0.0061 seconds after the Mercedes team offers another record-breaking performance in a qualifying season that has had Hamilton and Vettel fiercely fighting for points.
The British driver made up lost ground in a late flying lap that had him secure his place ahead of Vettel, who has now been position at fifth on the starting ground after a three-place penalty.
Hamilton will now need to outpace four-time champion Vettel by eight points in total in order for Hamilton to take home his fifth drivers championship title in his career.
Kimi Raikkonen impressed after he came he came in third ahead of Valterri Bottas, with Daniel Ricciardo taking fifth place for Red Bull. Esteban Ocon of Force India claimed sixth place ahead of Nico Hulkenberg of Renault, Charles Leclerc of Sauber, Romain Grosjean of Haas, and Sergio Perez as the second driver for Force India.
For Hamilton, it was the third successive pole at the US Grand Prix, and the 81st pole of his overall career so far. Vettel, on the other hand, was given a penalty during the earlier practice race for failing to maintain a minimum speed during a red flag period, and his position on the starting grid was pushed back to fifth. He then made an error, and collided with Daniel Ricciardo before spinning out on the track.
