Hamilton’s View on the Singapore Grand Prix
With the Singapore Grand Prix coming up, Lewis Hamilton has stressed the point that Mercedes needs something special if they want to win the 2017 Formula 1 championship. Although Hamilton effectively halved Vettel’s championship lead at Spa, the Brit felt that the Ferrari was actually the quicker car. He believes that compared to the Mercedes, Ferrari have a more predictable and consistent machine.
After winning the Belgian Grand Prix, it was said that Hamilton did not appear happy with the results. In reply Hamilton said that he was happy, but for him, the competition is not over. He is keenly aware of the difficulties that lie ahead. He went on to explain that Ferrari were quicker in the race and he is focusing on how to bring some magic into the Mercedes camp so that they can win the next eight races.
According to Hamilton, it is going to take every single member of the Mercedes team to work together in order to come out ahead. He said he is looking forward to the challenge but he needs to have a couple of strong races. Speaking about the WO8, Hamilton was clear on the fact that the car is not quite where they need it to be. It has excellent trim but struggles in the races.
A Chance to Close the Gap
Conflicting reports have come about saying that Mercedes have the best machine. Hamilton for his part insists that they do not in fact have the best or fastest car. There are pros and cons to each car with the Mercedes faster in certain areas and the Ferrari faster in others. It varies from race to race. That being said, Ferrari has had the most consistent season so far, hence the lead they hold.
In Spa, Mercedes had a solid weekend, but it was only just enough to keep them head. In Singapore, it may turn out differently. In the upcoming races, the teams need to apply significant downforce. This could be an issue for Mercedes but the team is quite confident for this weekend. Historically, the Singapore Grand Prix has been good to Mercedes and it is an excellent opportunity for Hamilton to close the gap on Vettel.
