LA Ram Andrew Whitworth Retires

March 18, 2022 by

Los Angeles Rams playmaker and champion left tackle Andrew Whitworth has called time on his career after 16 seasons in the NFL.

The 40-year-old announced his decision in an Instagram post on Wednesday.

Whitworth in his video announcement explained how the “warrior” in him wants to continue playing, but that his body just isn’t up to the challenge any longer. The star said the final month of the season had been a particularly tough time for him.

His illustrious résumé includes four Pro Bowl selections and two first-team All-Pro selections. He’s also the first 40-year-old to have started at left tackle in the history of the league. Whitworth turned 40 in December.

During his five seasons starring for the LA Rams, he started 71 NFL games. In 2021, he was named the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year.

Whitworth also spent 11 seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals, during which run he started 168 games for the team.

Of his time with the Bengals, Whitworth had a great deal of emotionally charged things to say, including how he had given his heart and his soul to the team and its surrounding community. He said he had helped the Bengals create a culture of winning, which isn’t at all different to his time with the LA Rams.

The Rams made Whitworth one of their very first free-agent additions under McVay. They signed him to a three-year, $33.75 million contract in 2017, followed by three years more in 2020. Online betting in New Zealand saw a surge in wagers placed on Rams games during Whitworth’s tenure, reflecting his impact on the field and popularity among fans.

Whitworth’s retirement marks the end of an era, but fans should stay tuned for the upcoming NFL season, which promises more excitement and new talents emerging on the field.
