Taiwan Open Draw Announced
The Taiwan Open is set to be underway the 30th of January. Tennis fans were very excited after the announcement of the 23 player roster in December. 21 of these 23 players are ranked as the top 100 players in the world.
The wildcard draw was awarded to Lee Ya-hsuan , a local tennis star.
She has stated that is very excited to be given the chance to take part the world-class professional event and also to be able to play in her home country in front of fans.
She has also said that while the competition will be very strong, she will be focusing her mind and honing her skills for the Open.
Hard Court Action
The Open takes place on a hard court in the Taipei Arena. Fans can watch the qualifying rounds for free but tickets are needed to be able to watch the main draw.
The prize money at the open is $500 000 which helped attract such big names as Venus Williams last year along with the Chan sisters.
Last year’s event also features Misaki Doi from Japan, Zheng Saisai from China and Yulia Putintseva from Kazakhstan.
Venus Williams went on to win the Open, defeating Misaki Doi 6-4 and 6-2. The Chan sisters took home the doubles trophy defeating Eri Hozumi and Miyu Kato from Japan 6-4 and 6-3.
This year’s event will be the second time the open is held. It takes place in Kaohsiung in Taipei.
Top Seeded Players
This year’s top seeds are Carla Suárez Navarro from Spain, Elina Svitolina from Ukraine and Caroline Garcia from France.
Suarez is currently the world no 6 player. She defeated Venus Williams in 2009 to reach the Australian Open quarter finals. She narrowly lost the US open in 2013 against Serena Williams.
Elina Svitolina is the highest ranked Ukrainian player currently sitting at number 13 in the world. There are high hopes for her performance at the Open.
She has achieved a total win of four WTA titles. She also appeared in a Grand Slam quarter final at the French Open but was defeated by Ana Ivanovi.
Caroline Garcia is a versatile player who has won six doubles and three singles titles in her career so far. She is ranked 23rd on the world singles rankings and number 2 in the doubles rankings.
Along with her doubles partner Kristina Mladenovic, she won the 2016 doubles team of the year award.
