Ash Barty on Sunday won her fifth title for the year when she beat Swiss player Jil Teichmann 6-3, 6-1 in the final of the glamorous Cincinnati Open.
Her fifth and most recent title puts the Australian in a strong position for the US Open, which would be the last and final gong sounding the closing of a truly all-conquering season.
After a week that saw the Wimbledon champion drop not as much as a single set, Barty appeared at the top of her game against her opponent on Sunday. She ultimately put the day’s play to bed by taking the 13th title of her career in only 72 minutes.
Speaking to the press after the match, the Aussie said the week leading up to the final had been nothing short of awesome, while adding that with each additional game played, she felt as if certain parts of her game had gotten progressively better and better still.
For world No. 76 Teichmann, Sunday’s loss will have been a disappointing affair, especially considering her own run-up in terms of the preceding week. Coming into the final as the lowest-ranked Cincinnati Open finalised in an incredible 13 years, Teichmann walked all over several elite players on her way to the final round – including world No. 2 Naomi Osaka, Olympian Belinda Bencic, and Wimbledon stage-maker Karolina Pliskova.
The match would ultimately prove Barty’s for the taking – and all with the backing of 8 aces, which took the sterling total for the week all the way up to an incredible 42.
