Fed Cup: Germany vs. USA, Maui 2017

Tennis-Packed Fed Cup Weekends Coming Up

It’s no stretch to call the Fed Cup the World Cup of women’s tennis; like their male counterparts in the Davis Cup, the women who compete in the Fed Cup play for their countries, rather than individual glory. Nevertheless, it still attracts some of the top female athletes in the sport. So it’s no wonder that the Fed Cup attracts a fair amount of betting action online from New Zealand’s dedicated punters, even when the national team is nowhere near the World Group or World Group II rankings.

The first of three rounds in the 2017 Fed Cup, sponsored by BNP Paribas, will take place on the weekend of February 11-12. All eight teams in the World Group will play their Round 1 matches simultaneously, at four locations around the world. Reigning champions Czech Republic will be at home against Spain in Ostrava, Belarus will face the Netherlands in Minsk, 2016 runner-up France will play Switzerland in Geneva, and Germany will travel to Hawaii to meet the USA.

Tennis in a Tropical Paradise

Maui’s Royal Lahaina Resort is the idyllic setting for the USA/Germany clash, with the best-of-five match series kicking off with two singles matches on the Saturday. On the Sunday, the outdoor hard courts will host two reverse singles matches, followed by a doubles match.

The US team has yet to be nominated, and the German team is also uncertain, although we do expect it to include Angelique Kerber, currently the world Number One. On the face of it, the Germans should have the edge: they are seeded third, while the USA has only just managed to get promoted back into the World Group from World Group II.

However, sports betting fans should remember that the USA has won more Fed Cups than any other team: 17 in all. Germany, on the other hand, despite currently being seeded third, crashed out of the 2016 Fed Cup in a first-round defeat to Switzerland.

Many punters are staying loyal to the top-seeded Czech Republic, hoping for a repeat of last year’s victory. But however events pan out in the later stages of the Fed Cup 2017, the opening matches between Germany and the USA are sure to provide ample betting entertainment.
