High Level Security For Serena Williams In ASB Classic
Tennis great Serena Williams has been in Auckland in order to attend the 2017 ASB Classic. For her stay she has been attended to by an unusual level of trained security staff at all hours, both in public and at her hotel. The public security contingent has been even larger than at the hotel. It’s said that the increased security is over concerns due to the net worth of her engagement ring, but many say that the star has simply increased her security detail in recent years, and that she now travels with a full staff complement wherever she goes.
The security staff will remain in service for the total length of her stay in Auckland and they will be operating 24 hours a day.
Protecting a Top Sports Star
Serena Williams is widely regarded as the greatest female tennis star ever to step onto the court. She has won a total of 22 grand slam trophies in her illustrious career.
Williams is the second highest paid female sports star. She has various endorsement deals and she has recently become engaged to the co-founder of Reddit who is also worth millions.
When she landed in Auckland she only spent a short time with waiting media, before she was rushed off by her security team and taken directly to her hotel room. Media in the surrounding area where strong-armed to clear room for the player.
It is believed that Venus Williams, Serena’s sister, is staying at the same hotel she is, but both players are staying in separate accommodation than the rest of the ASB tennis players. Serena will be one of the biggest sporting personalities to ever visit the country that could be part of the reason for the heightened security for the ASB Classic.
Event Security Stepped Up
The director of the tournament, Karl Budge has also said that they take the security at the event very seriously. He said that this is the highest level of security they have ever employed at an ASB event. The head of the security team at ASB is an ex-SAS soldier and the whole senior management team was sent to America for a pre event security meeting.
Serena is still taking the time to practice every day. Security staff is posted mere metres from the star while she is using the hotel courts for practice. Budge stated that even though Auckland is a very relaxed venue, it is not worth it to take any chances when it comes to player security, event security and fan security.
This ASB will be the 32nd event held for Women. It is a joint ATP and WTA tour this year.
