The New Zealand Black ferns held on to their World Cup Sevens title as they beat out France during the final game of the tournament. The game, which was played at the AT&T Park in San Francisco, ended in a total victory for the Ferns with 29-0.
Black Ferns start Michaela Blyde was the star of the match, earning a hat trick for her team and being the leading scorer for the event. Her treble also marked up her tally of 9 tries for the entirety of the World Cup Sevens championship, earning her the title of the women’s world sevens player of the year.
Blyde told reporters after the match that being able to earn so many tries in a single game of the World Cup felt incredible. She also mentioned that she would not have been able to do it on her own, saying that her teammates helped her out immensely along the day. She lastly added that the other girls on the team were the workhorses that created the scoring opportunities for her.
The New Zealand women’s team has been doing well, both this season as last. Their latest victory is a mirror of their performance at the 15-a-side World Cup that took place last year, as well as the gold medal they earned at the Commonwealth Games sevens competition, which took place earlier in 2018. They are also the first team to win the women’s World Sevens back-to-back since 2013.
