New Zealand’s Blues, Chiefs, Crusaders, Highlanders, and Hurricanes are considering a reorganisation of Super Rugby. It has been announced that a review will be undertaken, one that’s been designed to help keep the game relevant and ensure it can be maintained in the future.
Chief Executive Officer for the sport in New Zealand Mark Robinson has stated that the review will be looking at a range of options. He said that as long as they’re beneficial to New Zealand while remaining committed to the Super Rugby governing body SANZAAR and its broadcast partners for the next five years, they will be considered.
The competition is 25-years old and currently involves 15 teams from five countries. It has faced heavy criticism of late regarding its tendency to be difficult to manage and how often its format is getting changed.
Robinson stated that a recent study has discovered several areas of opportunity for Super Rugby cost and revenue issues specifically. He added that the impact of the novel coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic is also being taken into consideration, prompting a renewed look at a range of possible scenarios for both the Clubs and the competitions itself.
The review has been named Aratipu, the Māori word for Growth, and will be conducted by representatives of our five clubs and their stakeholders. The ongoing suspension in light of the sickness’ spread has given us the chance to reshape the Kiwi Super Rugby scene, throwing its most vulnerable aspects into the limelight.
