Super Rugby Domestic Series Set for June 13

May 13, 2020 by

A Super Rugby Mini-Series for teams from New Zealand will start on the 13th of June. This is thanks to our government’s announcement that the novel coronavirus COVID-19 Alert Level for the country will be brought down on Thursday 14 May.

The Alert Level coming down from 3 to 2 means that professional sports can start up again, as long as everything takes place behind closed doors. This move will make New Zealand the first major Rugby nation to announce that competitions will be restarted after everything worldwide ground to a halt during the pandemic.

Chief Executive of New Zealand Rugby Mark Robinson was understandably elated, calling the news fantastic for everyone in the country involved in the game. He said the past while has been an incredibly challenging one for us all and he hopes that this good news serves up some much-needed hope and inspiration to Kiwis. He added that he is proud that our country is coming to the foreground in terms of emerging from the mass shutdown, too, saying that we need to do everything right.

Our five teams, the Blues, Chiefs, Crusaders, Highlanders, and Hurricanes will face off against one another over 10 weeks, with 2 games every weekend in the Super Rugby Aotearoa Tournament. Players will use chartered planes on match days and will all be checked daily for COVID-19 symptoms.

The bigger Super Rugby Tournament, which includes squads from Argentina, Australia, Japan, and South Africa, got suspended in March and there are not yet any plans for it to resume.
