New Zealand Rugby has confirmed that talks are taking place regarding staging a cross-code game between our All Blacks and the Kangaroos from Australia. Chief Executive of NZR Mark Robinson has substantiated reports that a historically significant hybrid game could well happen later on in 2020, as part of a money-making effort to offset the massive losses the industry has undergone. It would bring two of the very best international teams from Rugby Union and Rugby League together in a thrilling match-up.
Robinson stated that the novel coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic has compelled all sports codes to start thinking outside the box as they try to recover from the massive deficit they’ve had to absorb. He added that he feels it’s important to clarify that NZR’s priority is for the All Blacks to keep playing International Rugby for the rest of the year, and discussions are being held around the uncertainty about this being possible.
He said that this option has been put to NZR about this hybrid game against the Kangaroos and it’s one of several options they’re considering in a year as unique, to put it mildly, as this one is. Robinson added that everything is possible as they try to generate revenue production for the last six months of the year.
Early reports suggest that the match would be made of 14 players on each side, but other details are thin on the ground. The game may take place in December.
