Cycling New Zealand To Face More High Profile Resignations

November 29, 2021 by

Cycling New Zealand has announced that another two of its senior staff will be resigning soon in the midst of an inquiry after the death of cyclist Olivia Podmore. It’s believed that Martin Barras, director of High Performance, along with sprint coach Rene Wolff will be departing from the sporting organisation. The leaving of these two latest staff follows the most recent resignation of chief executive Jacques Landry.

The departures follow on three months after the incident, in which it’s suspected that Podmore committed suicide. The Rio Olympian’s death has caused a huge stir among the culture that’s been built up around achieving high performance within Cycling New Zealand, as well as the lack of focus on the overall welfare of the athletes that are part of the organisation.

This tragic event has also attracted attention from those involved in online betting, as the performance and well-being of athletes can significantly impact betting odds and outcomes.

Martin Barras, who has worked for Cycling NZ since 2018 after previously being a senior track coach for Cycling Australia, has been responsible for the high performance operations that been organised by the New Zealand sporting branch. Barras also held her own, important role in terms of the selections of the major events that athletes would take part in, including the Olympic games.

Concerns regarding the selection process had already been raised during August of 2020 by Cycling New Zealand’s Athlete Voice Committee. This came at a time when many of the athletes were disputing decisions made by the national body over selections for the Tokyo Olympic Games.
