The New Zealand’s women’s national hockey team have been knocked out of the Hockey World Cup at London after a close loss to Argentina during the second round.

Argentina scored their first goal in the second quarter of the game, which came after the team was awarded a penalty stroke. The penalty came in the form of an obstruction by New Zealand keeper, Grace O’Hanlon, who glove came loose and knock the ball out of player. The obstructed shot was taken by Argentinian Agustina Habif.

The penalty was then converted by Noel Barrionuevo before Argentina claimed victory over the Black Sticks in the 49th minute of the game when Delfina Merino earned another point for her team.

Mark Hager, Head Coach for the New Zealand team told reporters that they had not hit their game in the pool matches. He added that no one wants to play Argentina at this point, and that they only had themselves to blame for their earlier results in the season.

Argentina’s victory comes not longer the team knocked out the South African women’s team, the Proteas, from the Hockey World Cup with a 1-1 draw. Despite ending in a draw, a low standing in the season meant that they were forced to retire from the World Cup for the rest of the year, finishing at the bottom of the roster.

Argentina is set to take on Australia next, but many believe the South American team will go on to ultimate victory.
