Wellington Phoenix has questioned the legitimacy of Roy Krishna’s late dismissal with A-League Referee Boss Ben Wilson. The Football Club demanded a Please Explain from Wilson after their star striker saw red in the team’s 3-1 win over the Western Sydney Wanderers on Sunday the 17th of March, but they were not able to lodge an appeal. As a result, the A-League’s leader of the Golden Boot will miss his team’s upcoming Newcastle Jets game next Saturday thanks to being handed two yellow cards in just five minutes during the closing moments of the emotionally-charged victory.
Wellington Phoenix specifically took issue with the first yellow handed out, which Krishna received in the 88th minute. The player got booked for what was regarded as a reckless challenge on Rashid Mahazi. He managed to win the ball, but it looked like he also caught the Sydney Wanderers’ armpit with his elbow when he followed through. Krishna then received a second yellow card in minute 92 after he flung his arm back and hit defender Raul Llorente in the face as he tried to hold the ball up in the corner. Referee Alex King didn’t call foul, but the Video Assistant intervened, and that’s when Krishna’s late dismissal was effected.
Although Mark Rudan, coach for Wellington Phoenix, declined to make comment on the specific incidents, he did acknowledge that the Club has written to Wilson, the Director of Referees for Football Federation Australia, seeking an explanation for the first yellow card. They also queried the second-half penalty, ultimately missed by Alex Baumjohann.
