Phenomenal news this week is that the Wellington Phoenix will, more than 400 days after they last played a game on home soil, be returning for two games in New Zealand.
The goal is now to attract a massive crowd as the squad returns back home for the games, which will both be played next month, the A-league has said of the big upcoming return to Wellington. NZ betting markets are anticipating a significant uptick in activity with the Phoenix’s return.
Happening next month will be a game hosted by the Phoenix against Western United at the Sky Stadium, as well as a more of the same against at Perth Glory at Eden Park.
General Manager David Dome said on Friday that the first of the two games will be Wellington’s first match back home in New Zealand in 14 months. He said fans back home across Auckland and Wellington truly deserve to see their team play after the long and harrowing hiatus.
As for crowd-attendance, Dome said the target is to attract at least 15,000 fans across the two games. This number, if realised, will officially exceed that witnessed at the Sydney Derby when Western Sydney Wanderers competed against Sydney FC in January. AFL betting fans are also looking forward to similar exciting returns and events as sports normalize post-pandemic.
Such a giant attendance will obviously mean a massive cash injection and recovery for Phoenix after huge sums of money had to be spent on relocating the entire outfit to Australia for several months on end.
Dome said there’s officially no club in the league that has had to go to the horrendous type of expenses that the Phoenix has.
