A Man For The Season For Manchester City
Manchester City fans are a passionate bunch: passionate about football, passionate about Manchester City and passionate about Kevin De Bruyne. All in all, things are good in camp Manchester City. Their players make up the who is who in the world of football, accounting for 4 of the 10 top goal scorers in the international world of Premier League football. To top it all off they are second only to Manchester United when it comes to shutting out the opposition completely, having done so a total of 7 times in the last 12 league games. Things are well in Manchester City land.
And then, as if things weren’t going swell enough already, there’s Kevin De Bruyne from Belgium. The Belgian midfielder is the newest wonder-boy to become Manchester City’s main man with a plan. The fact is, all great sides in Premier League football have evolved around a key individual, a main man.
For Manchester City, for this season, that man is Kevin De Bruyne.
The Stats
De Bruyne racked up a remarkable 18 Premier League assists during last season and he proved absolutely critical during Manchester City’s recent 2-0 victory over Leicester, taking a staggering 107 touches.
It may very well all be on account of the fact that the 26 year old has been moved into the all-important central midfielder role, a role which lends itself to the making or breaking of leaders on the field. For De Bruyne it has been a positive, what with him making significantly more passes than ever before. He has stepped up to the plate, dictating play, and dare we say he’s completely suited for the role.
De Bruyne is involved in two thirds of all open field moves ultimately leading to a goal, with a 23 out of 40 record. This is roughly 7 more than the next best man for the job.
Commentator Jamie Carragher recalls that it wasn’t always clear what the best role for De Bruyne should be. According to Carragher, all credit belongs to coach Guardiola for swinging and swopping the positional changes until he got it just right with De Bruyne.
The fact of the matter is that it would not have taken Guardiola too long to realise that De Bruyne’s right foot is like a magic wand when it comes to goal scoring. Not to mention what he’s managed to do with his left foot.
Best of all, De Bruyne can do all of this at 25 yards.
