Winx Favourite for Queen Elizabeth Stakes
Winx will go into Saturday’s Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes as the firm favourite with the shortest-priced odds seen in modern racing history. Sitting at odds of $1.10, just about everyone expects her to win the $4 million group 1 event. In fact, punters don’t expect her to win, it’s a pretty much a given at this point. In her last 16 starts, Winx has won every single race and appears to be getting better and better.
With a win record like hers, she will play the anchor in trifecta’s, first fours, quads and all-ups. Some punters will even go so far as to put all their punting cash on her for the win. While the odds may not be huge, it still pays better interest than a bank account. But should be we be so confident? The Queen Elizabeth Stakes has a history of dropping favourites. All we have to do is look back a few years and we find a horror show of firm favourites that bankrupt many a punter.
A History of Lost Favourites
With horses like Lonhro ($1.26), Our Waverley Star ($1.22), A Dundeel ($1.28), It’s Sunline ($1.50) and Beau Zam ($1.67) all losing out, it should give us pause for though. But this is no ordinary horse we are talking about. Winx was taken through her paces at Rosehill in preparation for Saturday’s big race. Speaking to the press, trainer Chris Waller said that her morning workout was to ensure that everything was working as it should and that jockey Hugh Bowman was happy with her.
Waller went on to explain that it is all about getting the horses breathing right, making sure they are focused, moving well and most of all keeping the pre-race nerves from affecting the horse. Winx has already has three races with this type of preparation but this is the big one. She has been building up to this race since winning the Cox plate. For jockey Bowman, its business as usual on Saturday.
Bowman said that he is feeling quite relaxed at this point in time. The closer the race gets, the more the emotions will start to filter in. But he has been through the process a few times and is certainly getting more comfortable with it. Bowman said that the horse gives him the confidence he needs and keeps him relaxed. While the Queen Elizabeth Stakes might have a poor record for odds-on favourites, we have to remember that anything can happen on Saturday.
